The next tip is not a real insider tip, but definitely worth a trip. Isla Contoy is one of the most beautiful islands I have ever seen and you really feel like you are in paradise.
The Trip
You can easily book a trip to the island in the streets of Cancun. Actually all providers offer this excursion.
The excursion includes full board, i.e. you can get as many drinks as you like on the boat to the island. On the island itself, a very delicious lunch is prepared and you can eat your fill from the buffet. During lunch you can also help yourself to the drinks. Everything is included in the excursion price. If you wish you can also get a guided tour of the island, which takes about 15 – 20 minutes.
In most excursions a snorkeling trip is also included if the currents are not so strong. In addition, Isla Mujeres is usually also visited. I will write a separate article about Isla Mujereres.
The island
Isla Contoy is a small uninhabited island with an area of only 3.17 square kilometers. However, it is home to about 150 different species of birds.
It is about 30 km away from Isla Mujeres. The island is under nature protection, so a lot of care is taken to keep the island as beautiful as it is now.
The island is really a small paradise on earth, you have crystal clear water, white beach and coconut trees that grow directly on the beach.
With, but also without, diving goggles, you can see all kinds of fish, because there is no swell.
The rules
As already mentioned, the island is under nature protection and therefore, according to legal regulations, only 200 people per day are allowed to visit it. In addition, sunscreen, tanning cream, mosquito repellent, etc. are prohibited on the island to protect the environment. If you visit the island with children, you should secure a shady place right at the beginning or take a sunshade with you. Furthermore, plastic bottles of any kind are forbidden on the island and care is taken not to hang towels, bathing clothes, etc. on palm trees or bushes. The island should remain as beautiful as it is.
The costs
The cost of an excursion varies according to season. Mostly, however, prices are around 80€ (1993 Pesos / 94 USD) per person. This is not a cheap excursion, but definitely worth the trip.
