What many tourists are always amazed about when they vacation in Cancún for the first time is the crocodiles that live in Cancún. Yes, Cancún is home to a lot of crocodiles, even outside the zoo 😉
Where do the crocodiles live?
You can find a lot of crocodiles in the lagoon “Nichupté”. So if you are on vacation in the hotel zone, you will see many warning signs warning against entering and swimming in the lagoon, because crocodiles live there.
I myself have already seen several crocodiles in the lagoon, from small baby crocodiles to large, adult animals.
If you are on vacation in “Casa Quetzal” you might be lucky to see the crocodiles sunbathing in the early morning.
Do you have to be afraid of the crocodiles?
In general you should always have great respect for the crocodiles, because you should not underestimate these animals. In spite of the crocodiles, there are several water sports that are done in the lagoon “Nichupté”. I must honestly admit that I prefer to do these sports in the sea rather than in the lagoon. Even if the crocodiles always seem slow and sluggish, one should not underestimate how fast they can be and especially how high they can jump out of the water.
But if you are not swimming in the lagoon, you don’t need to be afraid to meet crocodiles. The crocodiles rarely leave the lagoon. When the hotel zone was quarantined in May, due to the Corona pandemic, and was therefore almost free of cars and noise, the newspapers reported that some crocodiles had been sighted in the hotel zone outside the lagoon. However, I have not seen any crocodile outside the lagoon so far.
