Recipe for Clamato / Ojo rojo (beer mix drink) in Mexico

I must confess from the start that I am not a beer drinker. Although I am German, I do not like the taste of beer at all. Nevertheless, I know from Germany the most different beer-mix-beverages. But what was absolutely new for me was how the Mexicans mix their beer. The beer mix is called “Clamato” or “Ojo rojo” and is prepared with different sauces, chili (how can it be different in Mexico? 😉 ) and other spices.

What is contained in the beer-mix-drink?

I once recorded a small video of my girlfriend preparing her beer. Watch it and decide if you want to try this drink. 😀

The recipe

The recipe is as follows:

  • Lime juice
  • Maggi sauce
  • English sauce
  • Valentina sauce
  • tomato juice
  • Spice mixture (chili, lime, salt)
  • and of course beer 😉

How does “Ojo rojo” taste?

As mentioned from the beginning I don’t like beer and I don’t like beer-mix-beverages. Nevertheless I tried Clamato and can speak of an explosion of taste. The different sauces and spices together in the mouth really lead to an explosion of taste. Since the main ingredient of the recipe is beer, of course, and therefore the drink tastes mainly like beer, it is not my case at all. But I have heard from many people that they really like to drink this beer-mix-drink. Besides, it is said to be the perfect remedy against hangovers after a party night.
