Mosquitoes in Cancún

Anyone who has ever been to Cancún knows that there are incredibly many mosquitoes here. So that you don’t lose the fun during your vacation in Cancún and don’t come home completely bitten, I would like to give you a few tips.

Because the mosquitoes here in Cancún really love me, I know the annoying mosquito bites too well. If I find myself in a room with 5 Mexicans, I will be the only one who is completely bitten. The mosquitoes seem to really love me or the german blood. 🙂

Luckily there are a lot of different mosquito products here in Mexico that you can use. Many of these sprays are very expensive or have little content. Since I need the spray almost daily I have already tested many products and now I have found a cheap product. More about this in a moment.

What do I have to pay attention to?

If you want to bring mosquito spray directly from your hometown, you have to make sure that the ingredients contain “DEET” (N-diethyl-m-toluamide). Only with this ingredient the spray has any effect at all.

However, during my first stay in Mexico I had already brought a mosquito spray from Germany, as it was available in an Offer there (brand: Autan). This spray uses the alternative ingredient “Icaridin” instead of “DEET”, but here in Cancún it has no effect at all. I was stung as if I had not used a spray. So you are usually better advised to buy the spray directly here in Cancún.

In any case, you should spray yourself completely, because I can tell you from my own experience that the mosquitoes will find the spots you didn’t spray. I once washed my hands directly after spraying and I did not spray them again. The result was 3 mosquito bites on the outside of my hands.

Which spray do I currently use?

As I mentioned in the beginning, I found a spray here in Cancún that helps me a lot and keeps the mosquitoes from biting me.

This spray is the spray from “Dr. Mosco” with the name “Spray Repelente contra mosquitos”.

It contains 250 ml and is in a pump spray can.

You can buy it for 45 Pesos (approx. 2 USD / 1,75 EUR) at Walmart, which is really cheap.

Still got stung?

As I said, the mosquitoes find the spots you didn’t spray. So if you should have been bitten, I can recommend the mosquito stick from “bite away”.

This stick is definitely one of the best purchases I made for my trip. With this stick the itching of mosquito bites will stop in a few seconds. The stick works with heat and destroys the substances that cause the itching in a mosquito bite. There are two buttons on the stick, one button heats the stick for 3 seconds, the other button for 5 seconds. The stick will then have a heat of about 51 degrees Celsius for 3 or 5 seconds. On some parts of the body this can hurt for a short time. The short pain is worth it in any case, if you are free of itching afterwards. Although I have already heard from people who like the itching of the mosquito bite. 🙂

I ordered the stick for 25 € (about 643 Pesos / 30 USD) at Amazon.

More tips

If you forgot to spray yourself and you want to sit outside in a restaurant or bar, just ask the waiter for “Repelente”. Many restaurants and bars offer the spray as service.

So that I don’t have to put so much mosquito spray on my skin, I was recommended by friends to buy an anti-mosquito bracelet. But I could not find this in the supermarket yet. As soon as I have tested it, I will write a small addition to this.

Another tip was to supplement my diet with vitamin B, this should also keep the mosquitoes from biting, but I haven’t been able to test this yet either.
