Today I would like to write a small article about the topic “Tipping in Mexico”. In Mexico it is very important to tip the waiters.
What many tourists don’t know is that most of the waiters don’t get a salary. The waiters live purely from the tip. Especially at the moment with the Corona pandemic, where restaurants are not visited as often as normal, it is very important that you tip the waiters so that they can live on the money. But also outside of the Corona Pandemic a tip should always be given.
How much do I tip in Mexico?
10% or 15% is the usual tip in Mexico. So you should add at least 10% of the invoice amount of tip to the invoice amount. Of course you are welcome to tip more.
Do I have to pay a tip?
As already mentioned, waiters live on tips. This means that if a waiter has not received a tip at the end of the day, he goes home completely without any money despite his efforts. He is not paid by the restaurant.
Nevertheless it is of course open to everyone to pay a tip. This means that if you are really very dissatisfied with the service and the waiters are obviously to blame for this, then you don’t have to pay a tip.
Because the salary of a waiter consists exclusively of the tip, the majority of the waiters are very concerned that everything runs to the complete satisfaction of the guest.
For example, I have never had to do without the tip.
