What is the current status (09/06/2020) of the coronavirus in Cancún? Can I go on vacation in Cancún with peace of mind? Are the beaches in Cancún open? Do I have to wear a face mask on the beach? Has much changed in Cancún?
If you’re thinking of vacationing in Cancún, you’re probably thinking about some of these questions. That’s why I’m writing this article to give you a rough overview of how things are currently looking in Cancún.
Ghost town Cancun because of the Corona virus
Only a few months ago, in May 2020, Cancún was like a ghost town. You didn’t see any people on the streets, only a few cars approached you, hotels and beaches were closed and even the whole hotel zone was sealed off and monitored by the police, so that only people with authority could pass. The hotel zone is usually the busiest place in Cancún where you always see people on the streets during the day and at night. A short video from May shows what it looked like during this period in the hotel zone, which is normally so busy and popular with tourists.
Reopening of the hotels
Already in June the first hotels were allowed to reopen under strict conditions of hygiene. The hotels were allowed to rent out 30% of the rooms. However, the public beaches remained closed and only hotel visitors could access the beaches, which were directly accessible from the hotels. As it was not yet possible to leave many countries and most of the stores and restaurants outside the hotels were still closed, the hotel zone still seemed very lonely.
In July/August, a little more tourists appeared again, because many restaurants opened again and it was possible to leave from more countries. The public beaches were still officially closed, but there were no controls, so you could visit them without any problems.
Current situation
Now in September most of the stores and restaurants are open again and you can see tourists regularly again. In all stores, hotels and restaurants the hygiene regulations are still observed. So you have to disinfect your shoes with special doormats when entering a store, you get fever measured and hand disinfectant or the possibility to wash your hands and you are obliged to wear a face mask. This also applies to restaurants. In the restaurants the tables have now a very large distance to each other or some tables may not be occupied, so that an appropriate distance between the guests can be kept. However, as soon as you are sitting at your table, it is no longer necessary to wear a face mask. This would also be very hindering when eating and drinking. 🙂
From Monday the 07.09.2020 all beaches in Cancún, Tulum and Playa del Carmen will open again. The hotels may be occupied up to 60% from this date. Many hotels currently offer great discounts for tourists. On the beaches themselves, no face mask have to be worn. In order to be allowed to enter the public beaches, all visitors will have their fever checked and their hands disinfected.
So you can spend your vacations in Cancún without any worries and you don’t have any problems with full stores and restaurants. Also excursions can be booked.
